This resource consists of 16 multiple choice questions involving equations and students coloring their answers on a Valentine's Day themed heart mosaic. Students work on the problems, select an answer, use the color assigned to that letter choice, and color in the designated area on the heart mosaic. I made it with the intention of doing state test prep with my RTI students around Valentine's Day which means after all the fun coloring we go over the problems and dissect them and discuss test taking strategies and correct answers. Using elimination and working backwards are big strategies for these questions that I think are important for students to know how to do prior to any testing whether it be unit, benchmarks, state, or MAPS. I could also see this being used as a unit test prep/review, a quiz, or an extension. Even if equations doesn't happen to be the content you are teaching around Valentine's Day you could use any 16 multiple choice questions that you have and simply use the coloring sheet with students.

I also made two versions: The original version pre-assigns the colors that students have to use for each answer. At first this was easy to grade since every student would have the same colored heart (as appears in the thumbnails on the answer page). However, afterwards I decided to make a version where students were allowed to select their own 4 colors and assign them to each letter choice and complete their own personal unique mosaic using their correct answers. Both are included in this download along with the answer key.

Please look at the preview to get an idea of the questions used.

Solve word problems leading to equations of the form ๐˜ฑ๐˜น + ๐˜ฒ = ๐˜ณ and ๐˜ฑ(๐˜น + ๐˜ฒ) = ๐˜ณ, where ๐˜ฑ, ๐˜ฒ, and ๐˜ณ are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
