Two Step Tango practices the needed prerequisite skills to multi-digit multiplication.
I have students that know their facts fairly well, understand the procedure of the Traditional Method of multi-digit multiplication, and remember to carry; however, these students need practice with mentally adding the digit carried to the product.
For example, if calculating 78x5 with the Traditional Method, they know to find 8x5, write the 0 and carry the 4. The next step is to mentally think "what is 7x5? and what is that+4?". Students that struggle with this step need extra mental math practice.
I call it Two Step Tango but, like any dance, the end goal is one fluid movement. The goal of this sheet is for the student to effortlessly and mentally add a number to a product.
For advanced and end-of-year 3rd graders or beginning-of-year 4th graders, this practice will be great to do before learning the Traditional Method for multi-digit multiplication.
