O'Henry's "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen": Cite Evidence to Support Claims

A rigorous, holiday-themed lessons for your secondary ELA classroom.

This resource is a complete lesson plan and student materials to help students cite evidence to support analysis of what the text says in O’Henry’s short story “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.” This lesson plan includes all student materials and an answer key.
This lesson should ideally be a second or third read of “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen” and students who are familiar with the plot of the story and who have some experience citing evidence to support claims will be most successful with it. In this lesson, students are given three sets of claims and counterclaims related to “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen” and they are tasked with going back through the story to find as much evidence as they can to support each statement. Students have to decide which evidence is stronger and build a claim based on that evidence. This lesson includes an exit ticket, which requires students to develop a claim and write an evidence-based paragraph to support it.
This lesson directly addresses CCSS R.1 (cite specific textual evidence to support conclusions drawn from the text), R.2 (determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development) and W.1 (write arguments). This resource DOES NOT include the text of “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.”

This resource is a compressed zip file that contains teacher directions, all student materials and an answer key.
