This lesson plan follows my Introduction to Ecosystems plan (also available in my store) and was written to introduce fourth graders to different types of ecosystems. It corresponds to McGraw-Hill Science but with a few minor alterations it could probably be used with any elementary science textbook. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the lesson.
During the lesson, students will:
*Review previous material (a vocabulary quiz is included, if you wish to use it. The quiz is based on the terms that were introduced and discussed during the Introduction to Ecosystems lesson.)
*Watch a Discovery Education and/or Brainpop video on ecosystems (if you have access to these resources)
*Read non-fiction text (textbook)
*Participate in a discussion of a non-fiction text
*Answer written response questions (see Independent Practice section of lesson)
*Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two ecosystems
*Solve riddles about specific ecosystems (the riddle cards are included at the end of the lesson plan).
-This can be a whole group or partner activity. I printed my cards onto cardstock and laminated them.
*Listen to a read-aloud about ecosystems (a list of suggested books is included)
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify several ecosystems and explain the differences between them.
