I distribute the first three slides to my students after they have read about the three types of governments and their power. I instruct them to use a pencil to show how power “flows” between national and state governments, define each government and provide examples if they can. We discuss the most relevant contemporary examples: Scotland/UK, Syria, North Korea, etc.
During discussion of the federal government organizer, we talk about where the powers are distributed. I have included a chart of powers of government and powers reserved to the people. With the chart, I either:
Distribute a copy of the chart and have students code each power
Cut the chart into parts/strips and have groups work to categorize their powers and then share with the whole group
Discuss the powers and write them on the organizer or make a chart on the back of the sheet to have more room to write
I have included student sheets and teacher sheets that have the arrows to show the flow of power already drawn in.
