1) This "Types of Monetary Policy" Activity includes 6 parts. It begins with a vividly colorful graphic organizer that asks your students to define monetary policy and identify important characteristics of the different types of monetary policies. Students will apply what they've learned to list the tools that the Federal Reserve can use to correct economic conditions and classify expansionary and contractionary monetary policy. Next, students will be asked to define the discount rate and graph how an increase and decrease in the discount rate will effect the money supply, nominal interest rates, investment spending, and real GDP output. Next, students will be asked to define the reserve ratio and graph how an increase and decrease in the reserve ratio will effect the money supply, nominal interest rates, investment spending, and real GDP output. Students will then be asked to define open market operations and graph how the buying and selling of bonds will effect the money supply, nominal interest rates, investment spending, and real GDP output. Next, students will be asked to define the federal funds rate and graph how an increase and decrease in the federal funds rate will effect the money supply, nominal interest rates, investment spending, and real GDP output. Finally, using 4 separate examples provided, students will be asked to critically think to diagnose the economic problems plaguing the economy and then prescribe the appropriate monetary policy that should correct economic conditions. Students will have to explain their conclusions to demonstrate their comprehension.
