Clear, Concise, Organized

Over the years, I have always found myself settling when choosing a graphic organizer to teach the types of quadrilaterals to my students. One didn’t include kites; another didn’t display defining characteristics of each quadrilateral. They were often lacking content or displaying too much content. I finally decided to create one of my own!

I am glad I did, and so are my students. I have had much more success with getting my students to truly understand what makes a rectangle different from a rhombus or how a trapezoid is different from a parallelogram!

The organizer only displays the defining characteristic underneath each quadrilateral – the one thing that sets it apart from the others. For example, the only characteristic listed underneath the rectangle on the chart is “4 right angles”.

Reduce confusion and frustration; increase mastery!

Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
