Using a POGIL activity, students will explore four types of reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, and double displacement. Students will answer a series of questions, arranged in increasing complexity, designed to build their working knowledge of how elements and compounds are arranged in a chemical equation and how to identify the type of reaction. Students will also be challenged by having to predict the products of chemical reactions when given the reactants and the type of reaction in the next lesson. This lesson follows balancing questions and precedes predicting products. Extension possibilities include covering other types of reactions in the future such as combustion, acid-base neutralization, oxidation-reduction, and precipitation reactions.
