Before having students respond to a writing prompt, students need to be able to identify the type of writing prompt. This step cannot be skipped! The powerpoint included explains the four types of writing prompts: expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive. It gives examples of each. There is an activity where students have to identify the prompt type and a writing prompt to respond to at the end of the lesson. I use this to kick off preparations for the state writing assessment, but it can be used whenever.
