This is a great way to show students the relationship between letters, phonics and words. It's also really hands on and students love creating things that jump off the page!
As a warm up, brainstorm words that begin with the sound /u/. If 'umbrella' has not come up, insert it into the brainstorm.
To begin the main activity, students cut out the lowercase 'u' and paste it at the bottom in the middle of the colored piece of paper.
Students then cut out the umbrella shaft and paste it above the 'u'. Once cut out, paste the umbrella top at the top of the shaft.
Lastly, cut and paste the raindrops above the umbrella. It's OK if they stick off the page a bit, that's what makes it look different and appeals to the children.
Students can color the umbrella as they see fit to make it original.
