This homework packet is a labor of love for me! When I started teaching First Grade last year, I was throwing together homework at the last minute. My students weren’t gaining anything from the homework (if they did it at all) and I figured surely there had to be a better way to go about this! I started thinking more about what skills I wanted them to practice at home, and how to incorporate parental involvement into the homework, and this is the finished product!. I hope you love it as much as I do… and my students actually enjoy the homework as well (or so they say)!
The different components:
Each week has the same activities, but with different skills & words to correlate with your Scott Foresman Reading Street Unit 4 Curriculum. I staple my homework packets weekly(copied front & back) and send them home on Monday. My students turn in the entire packet on Friday. I assemble the packet in this order:
(1) Editable Weekly Newsletter & Focus- these are editable so you can add your own math, reminder, & contact info. This goes on the FRONT of my homework packet so there is no reason why a parent or student “doesn’t know what the spelling words are”!
(2)Reading Fluency Passage- aligned with your reading curriculum! Each night, the student will read to the parent for ONE MINUTE. (We do this to prepare them for our “DIBELS” reading assessments.)
(3)Reading Fluency Comp. Questions- on Thursdays, the students will answer the questions about the reading passage that they have read for the week.
(4)Speedy Read- a quick way to practice the weekly sight words
(5)Spelling Word Menu- each week, a different “menu” appears for nightly spelling word practice.
