This is an intriguing example of the many uses of the word "up". Many adult ESL learners are pleasantly challenged and sometimes exasperated with so many uses; they can't quite put their finger on a specific rule. Some of these combinations with "up" are common phrasal verbs, but others are not. This list of sentences introduces them to these combinations in English that they hear everyday and have never really understood and now clarifies the meaning for them in more specific context. Many other handouts, including this one, are available in my book, "Let's Look At It This Way!, which is available in my store. It's actually a pretty good deal. For the cost of a few handouts, you get 50+ to reproduce for your instructional and classroom use.
