This is an introductory exercise using ArcGIS online, a free geographic information system that only requires an account to be created to use.
All you need is something as simple as a class set of netbooks and the internet
Instructions on how to create an account are included at the start of the activity.
The activity introduces the basics of ArcGIS online and allows students to create and evaluate a map of the U.S. showing Drought (over time), wildfire potential and Insect/disease levels in US forests.
Students create the map and answer a series of questions about patterns they see and possible reasons why these patterns exist.
All instructions are clear and have many included graphics to aid students in learning some basics of ArcGIS online.
