5. Presidents’ Day: The 3rd Monday of February—Honors the presidents of the United States including our first President, George Washington
6. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The 3rd Monday of January—An influential leader in the Civil Rights Movement, we honor and remember his achievements
7. Veterans Day: November 11—This date is when the Armistice was signed which marked the end of World War I. We honor those who have served in the U.S. Military
8. Memorial Day: The last Monday of May—Remembers those who have died while in service to the U.S. Military
9. Constitution Day: September 17—Celebrates the signing of the Constitution and those who have become citizens of the United States
10. Labor Day: The 1st Monday of September—Acknowledges the workforce by taking a day off work as summer ends
11. Executive Branch: This branch makes sure that the laws in the U.S. are followed—the President is in charge of this branch
12. Legislative Branch: This branch writes laws and votes on laws.
13. Judicial Branch: This branch interprets the laws and decides if a law lines up with the Constitution.
14. Mount Rushmore: Located in Keystone, South Dakota Honors 4 of our Presidents:
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln
15. The Liberty Bell: Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania A symbol that declares freedom to all people in the land
16. Thanksgiving Day: The 4th Thursday in November—The first harvest feast was in 1621 which was celebrated by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Native Americans. President Lincoln made this a national holiday.
17. Independence Day: July 4—The birthday of the United States, when the Declaration of Independence was signed
18. Columbus Day: The 2nd Monday in October—Remembers when Christopher Columbus came to the Americas. Also known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day to remember the Native Americans that were impacted by Columbus’ journey.
