The United States was founded on an idea. A pretty great idea. In this lesson, students read an essay to learn about the ideas behind the Constitutional Convention and the founding of American government. Using a NEW political spectrum, one that makes more sense than the old 20th century version of left vs. right, students take notes on an accompanying graphic organizer.
This is a great introduction or wrap-up to a discussion on the Constitution or American government. I use it in the first few weeks of school as an introduction to what America stands for as we will learn about how history shapes the American character from the beginning.
There are some great YouTube videos you may search for that also cover the same type of spectrum and same perspective of America's founding. Good for differentiation or another resource to supplement the essay.
