We keep track of important events in our social studies topics using a multi-tiered timeline that is located in the hallway between our 4/5 grade classrooms. There are three tiers on our timeline: Events in the World, Events in North America, and Event in Our State. The timeline itself is made using black paper tape stuck directly to the wall. The timeline cards are then placed onto the timeline. If you stick them to the tape, they are easily moved around as more events are added.
I have included two versions of the timeline cards, one version with pictures and one without (my students love to draw their own pictures on our timeline cards). Students should color in the pictures on the version with pictures in order to make them more colorful. I have also included one set of blank cards so you can add any of your own dates/events.
These cards are a great way to get your students visualizing the events in our history and also comparing them to events happening in other places.
I copy these onto cardstock paper and laminate them.
