Lesson Plan recommended sequence -

1. Read the White Man's Burden Poem with the class and interpret the meaning of the Poem to give students an introduction to the lesson topic of the day (10-15 mins)

2. Conduct the lesson using the PowerPoint. The PPT includes topics on: (~ 40 min)
- The Age of Imperialism
- Seward envisioning the American Empire
- Purchase of Alaska
- "Lifting Up" the world
- U.S. building a stronger navy
- Annexation of Hawaii
- Debate over the Philippines (Imperialists vs. Anti- imperialists)
- Filipinos Rebel & their independence
Students will be taking notes on a "fill in the blank"/ cloze notes-taking guide

3. Watch YouTube Videos that covers these topics - (15-20 mins)
- The Purchase of Alaska
- Annexation of Hawaii
- The U.S. occupation of the Philippines

4. Have students complete the exit ticket and turn in to you as they exit the door.
Question - Do you think it was right for the United States to interfere (get involved) with other countries' businesses? (5-10 mins)

TOTAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME: 70 mins - 85 mins

This would be a great lesson to include in the unit of U.S. Imperialism!
