Product Description
50 American States - 50 Graphic Organizers and 9 Activities. This resource includes 1 organizer for each of the American states. This resource also includes 9 activities, eight of which can be used for any state; the ninth is a general word puzzle (Finding Words within Words).

The organizers are designed so that students can do general research on one or more states. They are not meant to be complete state studies but will serve to accompany your class room teaching on the topic. There are many ways the organizers and activities could be used - individually, by region, as group work, as part of a project. They can also used as components of interactive notebooks. The organizers are a great way to give students experience doing basic research.

The students will need access to books and the Internet in most cases. I have included some useful websites in the teachers’ guide. The answer keys provide more than one example for the more general questions.

I have double-checked all information needed to complete the organizers - much of it comes from the American Census site (government) designed for students.

The nine activities included in this product are designed to be used with any state (except for the “find words within words” puzzle). A choice board is included at the end of the product if you wish to use the nine activities that way. This gives the teacher flexibility to use the activities in a variety of ways.

The activities are:
1) Compare and Contrast Two States: students can do a general compare and contrast – or a number of specific topics they could choose from (or they could be assigned a specific topic);
2) Illustrate with Storyboards (students choose an event in a state’s history and illustrate it in six storyboards and then write an outline of the event as a conclusion;
3) Weather - One State’s Climate: using online sources, students answer eight questions about the climate of a specific state (the last question asks them to compare its climate to their own state’s);
4) One State - Six Reasons to Visit!: Students choose a state and list six reasons they would like to visit it. In this activity students have to research the state to find six things they would really like to see and why they would like to see them. The students complete the activity by listing four reasons someone might want to visit their own state;
5) Biography Study Activity: students choose a historical figure from a specific state and complete a short biographical profile. The activity is illustrated with a picture of Benjamin Franklin, but this is just an illustration - he is not the assigned subject;
6) Create a Pinning Board: students glue pictures or draw their own of items that represent a particular state - this may be narrowed down to one topic as well;
7) Create a Webquest Activity: students make a short webquest activity using a state government website. They design it for another student or students to complete;
8) Finding Words within Words: a fun puzzle, great for early finishers: students find as many words as they can within the phrase “Fifty Super States”. A couple of challenges are included. An answer key is provided with examples.
9) True or False Activity - The 50 States: Students choose the four statements (out of 10) which are false and explain why they are false. An answer key is provided.

I have a resource available that consists of the nine activities and choice board is available to purchase separately. The graphic organizers and their answer keys are also available in separate products covering four regions: Northeastern states, Southern states, Midwestern states, and the Southwestern and Western states. They do not come with any activities but the separate activity package can be purchased and works perfectly with the regional sets.

The regional and stand-alone activities may be seen by clicking below:
