This project is geared specifically on the following two loaded FL standards:
SS.912.A.6.13: Analyze significant foreign policy events during the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
SS.912.A.7.4: Evaluate the success of 1960s era presidents' foreign and domestic policies.
After studying the Cold War's domestic and foreign policies, students are split into 5 groups. Within their groups they research and complete the "Cold War Presidents Handout.". Upon completion of the handouts, groups are assigned one of the 5 presidents from the standards (Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, or Nixon). Students then must become experts on their President to prepare for a Presidential Debate.
This product contains 2 pages for each President. On the first page is a summary of their accomplishments, an image, a quote, some information on either domestic or foreign events, prompts for either domestic or foreign events, and key people associated with that leader. The second page contains the 5 questions to be asked in the summative Presidential Debate, product sold separately. Students must anticipate the answers each leader would give on those topics.
This is a great Cold War summative project that requires critical thinking and cooperative learning. Great success in the classroom!
This resource can also easily be adapted to fit other units or even content areas- think Jefferson Davis, Lincoln, Johnson, etc.
