-Day 1-20 First Semester Thematic Notes

These notes can be used a number of different ways. I always have my students take Cornell notes as I go over the history in class. I start with the overview and move right the next Day which is a video in class. You may also use the Day 1-4 alternative, which breaks the overview down into a more detailed plan.

I have included all the videos for each of the presentations.

NOTES DAY 1-20: ( 3 different versions)
DAY 1: Overview of US History
DAY 2: We Shall Remain Part I
DAY 3: Colonies in the Wilderness
DAY 4: Colonies TCI
DAY 5: Enlightenment and Great Awakening
DAY 6: Road to Revolution
DAY 7: New Land and Constitution
DAY 8: Expansion and War
Day 9: We Shall Remain Part II
Day 10: Industrial Revolution
Day 11: Indian Removal, Reform, and American Expansion
Day 12: We Shall Remain Trail of Tears Part III
Day 13: Road to Civil War
Day 14: Civil War- ( Show 12 Years a Slave)
Day 15: Reconstruction
Day 16: American West
Day 17: Industrial Revolution II ( Men Who Built America)
Day 18: Imperialism
Day 19: Progressive Presidents
Day 20: WWI

I will be providing 2 versions of these notes. One version will be a slower version and the faster version will just be the essentials for faster curriculum.

Here is a sample of the DAY 1 and 2 notes.

I will also include the following items that I have used in creating these notes as accessories to the notes. Most of these items I did not create and am not charging for as I am merely passing them on as resources:

-WE SHALL REMAIN VIDEOS- 1-4 have students take notes front an back of one sheet of paper while watching the videos at home.

-COLONIES IN THE WILDERNESS READING- (in the Day 3 folder) I have the students read this in class.

(this may have to be purchased as I got this from a TCI notebook)

- RECONSTRUCTION EVALUATION- Do After teaching Reconstruction.

VIDEOS that I show throughout the semester to break up the teaching:

- THE STORY OF US VIDEO GUIDE – Gets shown throughout first semester. I show this off of Amazon Prime as it is free with your Prime membership. It is not on YouTube as it is a copyright violation. STORY OF US EPISODE GUIDES

- MEN WHO BUILT AMERICA VIDEO GUIDE: I have the students watch the first one in class and the rest at home.

- 12 Years A Slave video guide I show this after I review the Civil War.

- Lost Battalion video guide I show this right before the students take their final. It is really good and shows the brutality and lack of communication in WWI.

Here is what is included in this 6 page download:

1. Note Taking Guide for Students: This is essentially a blank section to take notes in.

2. Summary of the Video: A place for the students to write a short summary of what they have watched.

3. Teacher Notes from the: My 1 page of notes.

4. Vocabulary Section: I have chosen 3 words that would be good to have the students look up. I also have them write each of the words in a sentence.

5. Quiz for students / with answers: There is a 7 question quiz with answers from the episode. It can be taken in class or taken home. I think in class would be better.

6. Blank Template for student created quiz: I decided to add this to every Crash Course guide as it works really well with students.

**Also, I highly recommend having the students watch this on .5 speed. If you click the wheel on the bottom of the youtube video you can adjust the speed.

-CRASH COURSE WITH JOHN GREEN: These are videos I show in class as it does a great job of summarizing the event or events talked about. Each video is 10 minutes.

-DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: I have the students work on these for 20 minutes by themselves and then have them work in a group of 2 as they go over them. ( Ill typically use these the more second semester)

-ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: These should be done for HW as I go around and check them in the beginning of class. I usually have the students discuss them with each other the day before we take the test.

- I have included a Back To School Night PPT (2)
- DBQ writing bundle with lots of resources

The first version is more traditional with PPT's and vocabulary and tests. The second version is a more common core approach. I suggest a combination of the 2.

For most chapters, I have the work for each unit that needs to be done. I also have tests and quizzes, lessons that I think are important and any videos that I may have used in the PPT that is included.
