As a middle school history teacher, I know that on the first day of school most students get bombarded with rules and expectations for most of their first day. How about doing something different? Get them out of their seats and give yourself a chance to observe the kids you're going to be with all year.
This U.S. History Museum Walk does just this for your first day of school. Included are 20 pictures of famous people, events, or objects that the kids will learn about in their 8th grade U.S. History class. Each item gets printed and taped to a wall with the corresponding number taped over them - you know, for the mystery effect. Decide where you'd like to conduct this activity such as your classroom, library, hallway, or wherever you think would work best so you can observe your students.
