The teaching of social studies or history to fifth grade students involves instruction in U.S. history. While students, in general, enjoy learning about U.S. history such as the European explorers, Revolutionary war, and the Civil War, many schools are moving social studies out in order to make room for more English language arts. The purpose of this professional project was to create a resource guide to help fifth grade teachers develop their students’ abilities to understand people, events, ideas, and conflicts that lead to the evolution of nations, empires, distinctive cultures, and political and economic ideas. Included in this resource guide are suggested literatures and materials to teach U.S. history. Also included, are specific literature projects for assessing students’ understanding. A list of current references concludes the resource guide.
