This research project asks students to take a photo from 1912-2000s and use it as the basis to create their own historical research question, find sources and write an annotated bibliography, write a detailed paper outline, and finally produce a 5-8 page paper with Chicago style citations. Through using the photograph, students have some guidelines for where to focus their research (and the teacher does not have to read an entire class worth of papers on the same topic every year), but they are still given creative license to see how they can interpret the historical connections to this photo. Since there are so many photo choices (100+), teachers have the ability to differentiate for students who need more assistance and give them a photo on a topic they have already covered, versus students who are more independent and can handle researching a topic they are more unfamiliar with.
All directions (broken into sections) are included as well as rubrics for each section.
Included all photos.
