This U.S. History Timeline Activity is a great introduction to any U.S. History course and can also be used as a great end-of-year review! Students will be divided into groups and will be given a set of 19 posters (8 1/2" x 11" size), each of which depicts a different U.S. decade. The posters feature various images and text that describe or depict famous historical events, people, policies, topics, etc. For example, the 1960s poster features the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement, Counterculture, JFK Assassination, etc. Students will work together to construct a timeline of U.S. history by decade from the 1780s until the 2000s (although if you want to do a more limited timeline that focuses on a particular era, you are more than welcome). You can create a fun class competition by tallying up how many decades each group was able to identify correctly. I have included a score sheet to create a simple process and all of the details are highlighted in the teacher directions in the product folder.
If used at the beginning of the year, this activity works as a great icebreaker and can be very effective in assessing students' prior knowledge. If used at the end of the year, this activity can be a great way to review and reflect on the history of the U.S. since its founding.
In addition, there are two different methods in which to implement this activity that are featured in the teacher directions- choose the one that works for you! I have also included editable student directions, a decade checklist, a score sheet, and journal reflections for both the beginning and end of the year. I have also included a master set key that labels each poster with the correct decade(s)- these can also be used as classroom decor if desired. There is also a mini-key for quick reference.
* Please note: All documents in this products are PDFs with the exception of student directions that are editable.
* A few posters feature 2 decades, such as 1810s-1820s.
* Posters are available in both color and black and white.
