This Advanced Placement-level U.S. history presentation includes a definition of imperialism, the role of "yellow journalism" and Pulitzer and Hurst, social Darwinism, Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan's new steel navy, the annexation of Hawaii, the Spanish American War, Spanish General "Butcher Weyler, "Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain," the Teller Amendment, the Rough Riders and Teddy Roosevelt at San Juan Hill, American presence in the Caribbean Sea and American possessions in the Pacific, debate over the keeping the Philippines, the Anti-Imperialist League, the Platt Amendment, Emilio Aguinaldo, the policy of "Americanization," McKinley's "benevolent assimilation," the Open-Door Policy in China, the Boxer Rebellion, the Election of 1900, the Panama Canal, Roosevelt's "Big Stick Policy," the Roosevelt Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine, the Russo-Japanese War, the Great White Fleet, the Gentlemen's Agreement, and a quick look at disagreement between historians over the importance of domestic economic factors and the role of international politics as factors in the U.S. joining the imperialist race. This AP presentation includes class discussion questions and can be easily modified for all secondary levels of U.S. history.
