In the election of 1888, The economy was prosperous and the nation was at peace, but Cleveland lost re-election in the Electoral College, even though he won a plurality of the popular vote by a narrow margin.
In this re-match, Cleveland won both the popular and electoral vote, in 1892 thus becoming the only person in American history to be elected to a second, non-consecutive presidential term.
