This is a 10 slide, highly animated, power point presentations on US Presidential Elections - Election of 1988 - GHW Bush. Each of the presentation slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.
Although Vice President George Bush faced some opposition in the primaries from Senator Robert Dole of KS in 1988, he won the Republican nomination by acclamation. The Democrats nominated Michael Dukakis, governor of MA, for president. Dukakis had faced strong competition in the primaries, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson and Senator Gary Hart of CO.
Hart withdrew from the race following revelations about an extramarital affair, and party regulars and political pundits perceived Jackson, a liberal and an African-American, as unlikely to win the general election.
Once again the Republicans were in the enviable situation of running during a time of relative tranquility and economic stability. Running an aggressive campaign, Bush capitalized on a good economy, a stable international stage, and on Reagan's popularity. Dukakis' campaign suffered from several miscues, including failure to defend against Bush's attacks.
After a campaign featuring controversial television ads, Bush and Quayle won with a substantial margin of the popular vote, while winning the Electoral College by a landslide. Since the 1988 election, no candidate has managed to equal or surpass Bush's number of electoral votes won or popular vote percentage.
