James Knox Polk was the 11th (and youngest at the time), President of the United States. Polk was born in Pineville, NC but he later lived in and represented TN.A Democrat, Polk served as the 17th Speaker of the House of Representatives and Governor of Tennessee.
Polk was the surprise candidate for president in 1844, defeating Henry Clay of the rival Whig Party by promising to annex Texas. Polk’s legacy was the expansion of the United States. Polk’s annexation of Texas led to the Mexican-American War from 1846–1848, and the U.S. victory thereby led to the acquisition of large territories in the Southwest.
Additional territories along the Pacific coast and the northern border of the United States was also established under Polk. The Department of the Interior, the Naval Academy and the Smithsonian were all established under Polk.
