James Buchanan, Jr. was the 15th President of the United States, serving immediately prior to the American Civil War. He represented PA in the United States House of Representatives and later the Senate, then served as Minister to Russia under President Andrew Jackson.

He was named Secretary of State under President James K. Polk, and is to date the last former Secretary of State to serve as President of the United States. After Buchanan turned down an offer to sit on the Supreme Court, President Franklin Pierce appointed him Ambassador to the United Kingdom, in which capacity he helped draft the Ostend Manifesto.

During Buchanan’s tenure as President, 7 southern states seceded from the Union as the nation teetered on the brink of civil war. Buchanan , a Democrat was morally opposed to slavery but believed it was protected by the U.S. Constitution, was elected to the White House in 1856. As president, he tried to maintain peace between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the government, but tensions only escalated.

In 1860, a month after Buchanan left office, the American Civil War began.
