The Iran-Contra Affair was a clandestine action not approved of by the United States Congress. It began in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan's administration supplied weapons to Iran, a sworn enemy, in hopes of securing the release of American hostages held in Lebanon by Hezbollah terrorists loyal to the Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran's leader.

Reagan had become frustrated at his inability to secure the release of the 7 American hostages being held by Iranian terrorists in Lebanon. As president, Reagan felt that "he had the duty to bring those Americans home," and he convinced himself that he was not negotiating with terrorists. While shipping arms to Iran violated the embargo, dealing with terrorists violated Reagan's campaign promise never to do so. Reagan had always been admired for his honesty. With the backing of the president, the plan progressed.

The deal in 1985, involved the United States sending American-made TOW anti-tank missiles from Israel to Iran for the safe exchange of a hostage, the Reverend Benjamin Weir. Later, more weapons were transferred in exchange for the release of all remaining American hostages being held in Lebanon. By the time the sales were discovered, more than 1,500 missiles had been shipped to Iran.

Once the deal was exposed and deemed illegal, a thorough investigation occurred pertaining to Reagan's knowledge of and involvement in the deal.
