3 Day Lesson series on US Slave Trade including:
-a 45 minute film selection with guided notes
-a research activity on the slave trade
-an online museum activity
-a socratic seminar on human trafficking today
This activity asks students to create an online museum exhibit on several topics relating to American slavery. The directions have a sample project and clearly spell out the steps to complete. This is a great activity to develop the following skills:
-Research using databases
-Research using the open web
-Reading of nonfiction texts
-Disaggregating reliable & credible sources from unreliable sources
-How to create a bibliography
-How to use online media to create a museum
-Listening and speaking skills
Sample topics include an online source to help get students started with their research. Some topics are also biographical in nature. Topics include, but are not limited to: Harriet Tubman, Slave Trade, Fugitive Slave Law etc. Also, I have included resources for spanish speakers in this activity as well. Because the online museum uses visuals, video and has brief written text, this is a great activity for ELL students.
After research and assembling their topics, students then visit one another’s museums. This public accountability helps increase the quality of products that students produce...who doesn’t like to impress their friends?
Part 2 of the activity includes an option for students to research the presence of slavery in modern US culture. Several links on slavery in California today are included as a point of discussion for students.
This bundle will take approximately 3 days to complete if all parts are done completely. Lesson Plans are included along with a rubric for the museum, group work norms an socratic seminar.
