This full day of activities for your sub teacher (or for your own teaching practice) includes: Morning and afternoon large group “messages” for students to complete and for the sub teacher to use as “get acquainted” and “end of day wrap up” meetings. Each message should take from 30 to 45 minutes of class time.

Fiction and non fiction reader response papers for students to write after they have read independently for 30 (or more) minutes. Students will record what they learned about plot, characters, setting, and new words, whether they read a chapter of the book or the entire book. Non fiction readers will record facts and new words learned. These reader response papers provide the opportunity for small group or large group sharing upon completion.

The social studies activity focuses on political and physical maps of our U.S. States. Students will use available classroom resources to find cities on a political map of Minnesota and important landmarks on
a physical map of Minnesota.

Students will research and generate maps of other states using available classroom resources. Additional activities include a game board of state license plates for students to put together and play (remembering important facts and trivia from their state reports); and designing a new state license plate (graphic organizer provided for planning the design).

The math activity provides practice with problem in adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students should be grouped with others of all levels of ability so they can work cooperatively. When answers are correctly matched, they will color the”Road Trip USA” sign. Students will plan gas and food expenses on an imaginery 500 mile road trip.

The writing activity focuses on letter writing. The sub will brainstorm “crazy” ideas for students to include in a letter to their missing teacher. They will decide all kinds of horrible things that (didn’t really) happen, write the letter, and then have a partner edit the final copy. Finished letters may be shared within the large or smaller groups.
