US States: How many words can you make? has 41 printable pages to help your students explore abbreviations, contractions, pronouns, one-syllable words and multi-syllable words. Your students will unscramble a set of letters to spell a state’s name. Every US state is represented in this packet. Students begin this series with the easier state names (Iowa, Ohio, Texas) and work toward the longer presidential names (Washington, South Carolina, West Virginia). Students try to find as many words as they can, with special attention to abbreviations, contractions, and pronouns (e.g., Washington has 22 abbreviations, 8 contractions, and 4 pronouns).
Detailed lesson plans will help you teach your students effective word-making and word-lengthening strategies. There is an answer key at the back, as well as posters to help you teach these lessons.
