In this mini-unit of the 50 states, students answer 11 basic state questions which gives them a description of each state. This information will give your students a picture of the various likes and differences between the states in the United States of America. The information they gain will allow them to use this new found knowledge in many ways.
They can compare and contrast the states by the states that border them, the waterways within each state, and the agricultural and natural resources each state produces. They can also use their math skills (graphs) and create bar graphs and pictographs, based on the information they will find in their research. I have also included in this mini-unit, a blank United States Map (page 51) for your students to color in each state, as they complete the research. They loved it and couldn’t wait to complete a state so they could color in the state on their map. The completed maps make an attractive addition to your bulletin boards both inside and outside of your classroom to showcase student work.
In most resources, they state climate, water, soil, etc. as understood resources for each state. This unit is complete with an answer key that highlights numerous agricultural and natural resources from each state. I have given you many to choose from, so use the number you need, based on your grade level and student levels.
I have also attached a page with other activities (page 69), that I have used with my students with this mini-unit. Through the years my students have enjoyed the map unit, and they have gained a stronger understanding of map skills which has resulted in higher test scores on both my class tests, and the standardized end-year tests.
Enjoy the mini-unit, and use these maps as a springboard to help your students create new and innovative ways to use the state maps, crossing the bridge to other subject areas.
