This is a U.S. Symbols unit created by our first grade team to align with the common core standards for first grade. This smartboard file contains an entire unit plan for U.S. Symbols (3-4 weeks)! It begins by introducing what the word symbol means, using a video on BrainPop Jr. Each page contains a photograph the symbol, questions for discussion, a link to google maps (where you can see the real symbol up close!), and then a page for writing 2 facts learned about the symbol. Students write in their U.S. symbols booklet and color the picture of the symbol(this is available to download for free). We use some supplemental library books to read aloud about these symbols, as well as some of the books available online on Pebble Go. *Note-for this site you do need a password/subscription to log into them first for access (our school has their own subscription to Pebble Go). You can also use any other read alouds you choose to go along with this unit. The symbols included are: The American Flag, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, The Great Seal, The Bald Eagle, The Capital Building, The White House, and The Liberty Bell. Other vocabulary words in the unit are: symbol, monument, freedom, and democracy. There are 2 interactive picture/word match activities to review the symbols and their names. At the end of this unit we have students work in partners together to create a poster on one of the symbols, and then they share it with the class. There is also a end of unit assessment available that assesses students knowledge of the symbols and vocabulary. I hope this helps you as you develop or enhance your social studies curriculum!
