This packet was created as a resource to bridge the gap between kindergarten and first grade. I use the packet as word/phonics building activities and then the “test” as a formal assessment of their growth. Although, I didn’t take a “grade” on these in my own classroom, I was able to gain useful knowledge to further direct my instruction. However, these materials will be useful to anyone teaching the –ug family!
Included in this packet:
- ug word list (bug, dug, hug, jug, mug, and rug)
word cards with this weeks words on them – create a word ring or send home for practice
¼ sheet word list to send home
Read, Trace, Write the words
¼ sheet picture cards (Use blank paper to write the room or make 2 copies for an memory match game. FUN!)
- ug word cards, letter tiles for creating the words Give each child their –ug board and the sheet with the letter tiles on it. Cut each out and the teacher staples them to create a flip book.
Word cards with matching pictures Use as a writing resource or cut apart to have children match the picture to the word.
Journal Page – Use one or more of the –ug words to write a sentence. (You can have the word cards at the center for reference.)
-ug word slide. You will need to take an xacto knife and cut the slots for the slide on the mug. Students will cut the strip of letters from the bottom and feed it through the slots to read the –ug words.
Center cards – Laminate and have the kids use
play-doh to create the words or trace with dry erase
Large -ug poster, 6 smaller cards with the initial sound of our spelling words for the week. Place a magnet on the poster and one on the back of the addition letters for a word building activity.
-ug word page – fill in the beginning sound and rewrite the word
-ug word page – use stamps to fill in this weeks words.
Testing form – 6 blanks for words, a bonus line for the
word of your choice (sight word from the week or a word
that fits the –ug family like slug or tug)
