Description

Keep your students engaged before the holiday break with this fun ugly Christmas sweater activity. Students will think critically about their chosen or assigned scientist or inventor as they apply their knowledge to design a custom ugly sweater. Before getting started with the design process, students can read a short article or view the included PowerPoint presentation to learn about the history of ugly holiday sweaters and the different elements that go into their design such as colors, symbols, patterns, and 3D objects. After designing their sweaters, students can write about or present why they chose certain symbols, colors, etc. to represent their figure and the meaning behind each of them. This fun way to showcase learning can be used as an assessment, independent work, an early finisher activity, or a fun activity for classroom holiday parties. The sweaters make beautiful displays for bulletin boards, and students will love seeing each other’s work through a gallery walk.

This resource includes:

1. 3 sweater templates for each person (all come in black & white and color options)

2. 2-page article about the history of ugly holiday sweaters

3. Student directions and design tips (including information about color psychology)

4. Editable PowerPoint about the history of ugly sweaters (can be used instead of the article and allows you to edit student directions)

5. 19 different examples to share with students (at least 2 from this set)

6. Teacher tips

7. Blank sweater templates for additional flexibility

***Please note: This resource can be adapted to use with lower grade levels. I recommend just using the PowerPoint as a class instead of relying on the 2-page article about the history of ugly holiday sweaters. Similar information is included in both! Students in upper elementary will definitely be able to complete this activity!***
