What Were They Thinking? Christmas in the Early 1900s
Bringing Social Studies, reading, writing and holiday together, this activity is perfect to get kids thinking about the past, while also inspiring kids to use their researching skills to discover what Christmas was like in the 1900s.

Students will first take notes on information they research and on the two articles that are included with this packet. Using the information they now have, they will take a look at 11 holiday photographs from the years1890-1920, but with a twist. Each of the photographs has thought and speech bubbles embedded, as the kids will fill these in with "What they were thinking" when the photo was taken. Students will think crtically using their researched information to fill in these elements.

On the back of each of the photos there is also a sheet which asks students to think about "What they see, What they know, and What they still have questions about." This allows students to develop critical social studies skills while looking at the primary sources.

Included in this pack of materials are two projects that you may choose to complete. One an essay based on the information found, and the other a presentation.

If you have any questions, please message me. :)

The Elf Who Hated Christmas
A fun Christmas themed writing piece which includes 3 graphic organizers to help students develop their story.

The task asks students to write a story about an elf who hates Christmas. Over the course of the story, the elf needs to make a major change, and by the end, he or she must LOVE Christmas.

My students loved brainstorming ideas for this story and bouncing ideas off of one another.

A Soldier's Christmas:
Please consider donating to the Christmas Spirit Foundation. This charity provides Christmas trees to troops who are not home for the holidays.

Included in this packet are letters to loved ones from soldiers serving our country. Some of the letters are in cursive and quite difficult to read, so you may need to read these to students.

There are a total of 4 letters from soldiers from various periods of American history.

Lyrics are also included to a song that a soldier wrote while being away for the holidays.

A friendly letter sheet is also included so your kids can write a holiday letter to a soldier currently away from home.

I have contacts to send the letters that kids write. If you would like to send these letters to me or if you would like the address, please message me and I will be happy to help you out.

All proceeds from this item go straight to the "Trees for Troops" charity!

Christmas Close Reading Using Lyrics
Included here, by popular demand, are ALL 8 Christmas Close Reads Using Song lyrics.

My students love music as much as I do and close reading can be difficult, so why not start deep reading with something that students love? The songs included will allow students to think deeply using the questions that are based on the songs, as well as to further their understanding of how to pick text apart.

The 8 bundled songs with close read questions included are:

*"Little Wood Guitar" by Sugarland

*"The Grinch's Theme Song" (You're a Mean One...)

*"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"

*"Where are you Christmas?"

*"The Marvelous Little Toy"

*"You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," by Sia from the new Annie!

*Frosty the Snowman

*The Chipmunk Song

Song lyrics, 8 close reading questions per song, and theme/author's purpose/analyzing text graphic organizers are all included with this guide.

The lyrics, the metaphors, and the overall theme of these songs will create conversation with your students which will have them thinking deeply while reading and listening to the lyrics.

A Low Tech Christmas: Persuasive Writing
Eddie the Elf (one of Santa’s hardest-working elves), is trying get Santa to stop the production of ALL electronic toys, video games, and computers at the North Pole. Eddie has been explaining to Santa that kids should receive toys that have them up and moving, not sitting around, being a bump on a log.

Students are asked to write a persuasive letter to Eddie making their claim. Each student will use text-based evidence from the articles included persuading Eddie one way or the other; should the North Pole continue making technological goodies or not?

There are two articles included...one in support of technology for youngsters, and the other giving the cons of technology for kids. Both articles are scaled down for students in grades three through five.

Students are also given a note page, a graphic organizer to get them through the planning stage of planning, as well as stationary to write their letter.

This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core standard of writing.

Please note, I have this project listed as taking a week. This would be the approximate length if you used this as a complete project using the stages of writing.
