These Fraction Games
will be a hit in any math classroom. Not only will they help students master key fraction concepts in a fun and active way, but the games will help build conceptual understanding behind the skills.
Each game includes detailed instructions for implementing them with success!
Game #1: Comparing and Ordering Fractions Sort (8 Games)
Each student is given a game mat and a deck of 10 fraction cards. Students sort the fractions into one of five buckets: Close to Zero, Less than Half, Exactly Half, More than Half, and Almost One Whole. By sorting fractions in this way, students will be able to develop their own strategies for judging the size of a fraction. Build in a discussion after each round of the game and you'll hear kids say "I know a fraction is close to one whole when the numerator and denominator are very close together" or "I put this fraction in the 'more than half' bucket because I know half is 4/8 so 5/8 would be more than half." The game lends itself to rich dialogue and countless opportunities for discovery.
Game #2: Equivalent Fraction Sort Game (8 games)
Each student receives an individual game mat and 10 fraction cards to go with it. They sort the cards into one of four buckets. The buckets contain different benchmark fractions (i.e. 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, etc.). Every card displays a fraction that is not in simplest form and students must decide which of the four fractions each card is equivalent to. This helps them memorize common fractions equivalencies which will help in countless fraction lessons down the road.
Game #3: Improper Fraction and Mixed Number Matching Game (8 games)
Each student receives a set of 10 cards (5 Improper Fractions, 4 Mixed Numbers, and 1 Whole Numbers). They must match the improper fraction with the corresponding mixed number (or in one case per deck, a whole number i.e. 28/7). The product contains 8 different decks of 10 cards so that students can play this game as many rounds as you have time for. If students repeat the game with the same deck, it just further reinforces the equivalent pairs.
Game #4: Comparing and Ordering Mixed Numbers Sort (8 Games)
Each student is given a game mat and a deck of ten mixed number cards. Students use estimation to sort the mixed numbers into five different buckets such as "closest to 3" or "closest to 1-1/2." The product includes 8 different versions so the game can be played again and again!
