Students will begin this assignment by watching the U.S. Presidents Series Video: Ulysses S.Grant (on YouTube). The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of Grant's presidency. This video will first analyze what kind of person Grant was, a popular veteran who was seen as a hero of the Civil War. The video initially focuses on Grant's personality and how he often didn't fit the stereotypical "gallant soldier" image. His response to violence in the Southern States during his first term is explored as is his support of Reconstruction. The Cronyism which was prevalent in Grant's administration is explained in the video as well. Grant's failures, the scandals which damaged his reputation, the failure of Reconstruction, and the poor relations with Native Americans, are then covered and explained in the closing of the video. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read a biographical article about Ulysses S. Grant. His early years, his initial time in the U.S. Army, and his Civil War service are all covered. The article again reviews his two terms as president and the scandals of his presidency are reviewed in detail. Other legislation passed during his presidency, such as the 15th Amendment and the establishment of the the Department of Justice is also covered. The article concludes with his final years and death.
