In this day and age of accountability, I believe sharing this responsibility with the student should be a top priority. I have been compiling this set of un-bear-able phrases over the past several years. They are actual words out of the mouths of babes.
As we start the school year out together, I share my collection of phrases and we discuss the fact that these sayings all seem to be wimpy excuses. We also discuss how blame is usually shifted from ones self to others. After our discussion, we brainstorm Bear-able phrases for each unbearable one (providing students a positive example of what a responsible student would say), and create our booklets and/or bulletin board to track paw points and display our new phrases.
