This is one of my favorite activities to complete with my students while reading the novel Unbroken. Students compose journal entries imagining they are Louie, Mac, and Phil stranded at sea. This document guides students through 7 journal entries, guiding them in when to pause their reading to write, and what specific questions to consider. Not only do students plan their survival given their provisions, but also navigate intra- and interpersonal conflicts and more. For some added engagement, I measure out their desks to create a "raft" and make students sit on top of them with two partners and allow them to do some planning and brainstorming together. Rubric is included. Students really enjoy this one and it definitely promotes higher level thinking, creativity, understanding, and problem solving. Enjoy!
