Augment any patriotic study or holiday with this graphing practice activity. You'll find the activity is a good fit for 4th of July summer school practice, Memorial Day, Veterans' Day, a math connection to World War II studies, symbols of the U.S., or any patriotic study or occasion.
Your students will put their knowledge of coordinate systems, coordinate graphing, ordered pairs, and following written directions to work creating a mystery picture of Uncle Sam. Students plot points from a list of ordered pairs, coloring according to directions given, and then connect the dots to form the famous symbol of our country.
The coordinate plane includes positive numbers only. Please note that this assignment contains a lot of detail and requires coloring according to the directions to make the figure. Make sure students have practiced other coordinate graphing tasks prior to attempting this one. This makes a great activity for your gifted, advanced, or middle grades students. The full version includes 7 pages: cover, tips for teaching coordinate graphing, coordinate list, blank graph page, and two answer keys showing both the simple design plotted on the grid as well as a decorated version.
