I began developing this activity when working with my students on creating the number 20 using sets of 10 and sets of 5. With practice, I hope that my students will develop a flexibility of counting sets and recognizing sets within a number.
This activity addresses CCSS K.CC.4-5: Count to tell the number of objects.
I placed this activity in a center and the children did quite well. After some thought, I decided to restructure it to be a partner activity. It would make a nice introduction to your math unit on counting numbers beyond 20.
Children can easily find their partner by looking for the matching animal. Once they find their partner they can work together to count the number found on one of the cards.
The activity includes a "Show What you Know" page for independent practice or assessment.
I hope you have fun working on counting numbers beyond 20! Thanks for considering this activity for your kinder-crew!
