This is a poetry-writing frame, with an example version to read out. The intriguing backdrop will set children dreaming, and the simple line-starters will spur them to think up words to express their imaginings and build a powerful poem of their own. Extra ideas can be expressed on the wavy lines below, and even in the space below that. Prepare your class by studying and discussing the sea and its myriad types of content, from detritus to treasure and from flora and fauna to monsters and mermaids, not forgetting intangibles, such as sounds, colors, currents and atmospheres. Encourage, but don't force, poetic techniques - alliteration, simile, onomatopoeia, for instance. Best for ages 6-8 approximately.
