Start your lesson with the PowerPoint presentation, which includes songs used by the slaves to communicate secret messages. The presentation also explains how quilts were used to help slaves navigate their long journey to freedom.
The second part of the lesson consists of 9 QR Codes pages explaining 9 different symbols used in the quilts. Post the QR Codes around the classroom and have the students decipher the codes using their own phones, tablets or Chromebooks.
QR Code reader apps are available for free for Androids, iPhones, tablets and Chromebooks. Older students can even use Snaptchat to decode the QR Codes. They complete a worksheet as the decode the information.
At the end, students must draw their own quilt using the symbols they decoded to hide a secret message. (This part can be used as a quick assessment)
This is the perfect activity that can be used in small groups.
Kids love the fact that they are walking around, and using their devices while learning about the Underground Railroad.
