Attached are 10 short passages you can use to either introduce students to a variety of writing purposes or you can use as a follow-up activity after you taught the lesson. The different author's purpose passages include: to entertain by telling a story, to inform about something, to persuade the reader to think in a certain way, and to describe an experience. Print the following pages, put on construction paper, and scatter around room. Students number paper one to ten and go around room to read passages (they can also do this with a partner) and record author’s purpose for each passage. This can be a great assessment or practice activity. When all students have activity completed, go over answers and each passage. You can also print out all the passages and makes transparencies. Put transparencies up on overhead, and use to teach or review different author’s purpose. These passages are a great way for students to see and identify the different purposes why author's write.
