This unit is a character study based upon the learning targets for the MAISA reading units. Next Spring an Oriole, Night of the Full Moon, and Shadow of the Wolf are chapter books in a 3 book historical fiction series about a family of early settlers to Michigan and the Native American people they befriend. This book is perfect for third grade because it is about Michigan history and it is at an appropriate reading level for most third graders.
In my classroom, we read the chapter together first. Then a class discussion was conducted giving students permission to agree and respectfully disagree with their peers. After a period of discussion, students were encouraged to share their reflections with a partner before writing down the answer to the question. This was repeated for each reflective question.
Included for each book are story vocabulary and Kagan Quiz, Quiz, Trade activities to do as a study/review before the comprehension multiple choice quiz.
This is a great series with themes of equality, friendship, racism, responsibility, and honesty will provide topics for lively classroom discussions.
