This packet will help teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators understand the Common Core Reading Literature Anchor standard 1 in a deeper and more complete way. This resource includes an explanation of the anchor standard, RL.1. Graphic organizers are included for RL.1 for grades K-5th grade. This includes RL.K1, RL.1.1, RL.2.1, RL.3.1, RL.4.1, and RL.5.1. There are also foldables, posters, I Can statements, and rubrics for each grade level. Even if you only need one particular grade level, this will still be a helpful resource. Since the anchors are vertically aligned, students performing above or below grade level can simply receive differentiated assignments that are above or below grade level.
Students leaving school today without strong literacy skills will have a difficult time competing for quality jobs. Knowing this fact, Common Core State Standards place a strong emphasis on reading complex texts with a high level of comprehension to strengthen students’ literacy development. Even young children are asked to analyze stories, note important details and different points of view, and compare texts, authors, and themes. The CCSS play an extremely important role in what is being taught in our schools. Since the responsibility for interpreting and effectively implementing these standards rests on the shoulders of teachers and administrators, it is crucial that educators understand them the way they are intended to be interpreted. The intent of this resource is to support educators as they strive to understand each Common Core anchor standard, and as a result, strengthen their instructional practices. Hopefully, as educators become stronger and more effective teachers, they will provide a context in which students are invited to become lifelong readers and lead rich, literate lives.
