Understanding the difference between a Custom and Tradition is difficult for students. One way that I have found to help students understand the differences is by showing them photographs with accompanying captions of both customs and traditions. By doing this, and tying in the definitions of both terms, students are them able to add on more examples themselves and have a better understanding of these concepts.
This is a complete mini-unit of customs and traditions and is meant to support your work of cultures, customs, traditions, heritage and more! The unit begins by introducing traditions and customs. It provides vivid photographs and captions of each and explains why each image is a custom or tradition. There are pages where students are asked to respond about customs and traditions (both orally and in writing). Students are then asked to determine whether a photograph and its caption are depicting a custom or tradition. They are asked to justify how they know with evidence from the photograph and caption. Towards the end, students learn about a few strange (yet fascinating) customs/traditions from around the world. Finally, students complete a ticket out the door and different written responses.
